Health insurance for a German visa
Most German visas require proof of qualifying health insurance. The accepted format depends on the visa type — here's what counts.
What counts by visa type
Job seeker / Chancenkarte
Most consulates require either public Krankenkasse cover or a 'visa-compliant' private tariff like Care Concept.
Freelance / Self-employed visa (Aufenthaltserlaubnis §21)
Either public (voluntary) or private cover is accepted. Confirm with your local Ausländerbehörde.
Student visa (under 30)
Public student insurance (~€135/month) is the standard. Some private 'student tariffs' are accepted at a few consulates.
EU Blue Card
Either public or private, depending on income threshold and chosen tariff. Standard German health insurance rules apply.
Family reunion visa
Insurance must match the German-resident sponsor's system. Family insurance (free under public) is the typical path.
