What travel insurance covers, and what it doesn't
Short visits and tourists
Standard travel insurance covers emergency medical treatment for visitors. Sufficient for stays under 90 days without residency.
Not for long-term residents
Once you register as a German resident (Anmeldung), travel insurance no longer satisfies legal requirements. You need German health insurance.
Visa applications
Travel insurance is rarely accepted as proof of health cover for visa applications. Consulates require proper German cover or a recognised 'expat tariff'.
